Custom Upholstered Headboard Installation

A new headboard can change the whole look of your room. A wall mounted headboard can be the perfect solution. Wall mounted headboards offer a wide variety of textures, fabrics and styles to work with all your decorating needs. To install your own wall mounted headboard, follow the steps below:

Locate wall studs in the area you wish to hang the headboard. Studs should be 16” apart.
Determine the height that you want the top of the headboard to be.
Using a cordless driver, attach the wood cleat to the wall. The top edge of the cleat should be 8” lower than you want the top of the headboard to be. Be sure the widest part of the cleat faces out so the angle faces the wall. Use a level to be sure the cleat is installed evenly.
Be sure all 4 screws go all the way into the wall.

5. Simply hang the headboard onto the wall cleat.

Blank walls don't have to cost a fortune to decorate. Here are a few quick, easy, inexpensive ways to make your own art. Start by buying three or four empty frames that suit the overall decor of the room, then begin the hunt for something interesting to put in them.

Turn inexpensive paper coasters into instant framed art. Glue the coasters to colorful card stock (or use double-stick tape) and mount them in off-the-shelf frames. Look for square shadow boxes at your crafts store to give the thick coasters definition.

Use pages from a book and mount them in inexpensive clip-edge frames. Images can be backed with scrap-booking paper, when needed, to get the right size.

Custom Made Wood Screen with Upholstered Panels

These wood and fabric "screens" add a touch of whimsy to our designer house retreat. The pictures below follow our progress from start to finish. You can see the completed project on display at the Brevard Designer Showhouse from July 9th -24.

Decide on the size and shape of your screens and where the fabric panels will be placed. We chose 3' wood frame with raised panel inserts and made the frame 1'/2" thick for scale.

Stain and finish the wood and let it dry completely. We used Minwax English chestnut to blend with the chair stain.

Place boards under the fabric to decide where to cut the fabric to get the desired visual effect.

To upholster, cut the plywood to appropriate size. The next step is to cut the padding, lying the plywood backer on top of the foam batting. Allow an additional two to three inches of extra batting on each side so it can be wrapped around the backerboard.

Fold the fabric and batting over the backer and staple in place. Start with a few staples in the center of two opposite sides, then a few on top and bottom, working your way out from the center and alternating sides from top to bottom. Any excess batting amd material can then be trimmed away using a sharp utility knife . Upholstery shops normally add lining to the back side for a finished look.

The final step is to install the upholstered panel. Staples can be added for additional support for the backer. The panel can then be pressed into place. The only thing left to do is stand back and admire the results of your work.

Decorating Kitchen Cabinets

The space above your cabinetry is often overlooked and under utilized. If the space above the kitchen cabinets is open, you essentially have a high shelf that can be used to display a few of your favorite accessories.

When decorating these spaces, keep scale and color in mind.

If your items aren't tall enough, as in the above picture, use blocks or books to build them up.

Group similar objects together and use the opportunity to add a pop of color.

Line the tops of cabinets with silk plants or flowers, and choose a few pieces of beautiful pottery.

Use decor befitting of the home's overall design. For example, this home is full of beautiful Asian- inspired art and accessories, so we used some of those same things atop the cabinets.

A Room to Live In

We recently finished up a job in Cliffs Valley and wanted to share some of the photos.

We started off with a couple of options for the main level living room furniture arrangement. (See options 1 and 2.)

The clients decided that the Option 2 furniture plan would work best for their living environment. So, we were off to buy furniture. We selected the furniture pieces and upholstery fabrics to coordinate with a tree-of-life motif we were planning to use for the window treatments(see below).

We also worked with a custom furniture shop to specify the design and dimensions of the TV unit. (See drawing of TV unit.) The same furniture shop made the bookcases in the dining area, along with the pedestal dining table.

The final touch in the living room was the rug. We worked with Davis and Davis, a custom rug company in Tennessee, to create a rug with the right colors and pattern to enhance the upholstery and drapery fabrics. The process was back and forth with sample renderings and color swatches, even a 24x24 strike off of the actual rug. (See rendering of rug.) The end result was well worth the wait! The rug made the main living area come together by adding a beautiful pattern of color under foot.

For the kitchen and dining area, we selected new fixtures to really pump up the quantity of light for task lighting. The additional light really helps with food prep in the kitchen! We also installed mechoshade screen shades for sun protection in the view windows, and we changed the paint color.

Overall, this living room make-over was quite the transformation and the space is now nice and cozy.

The color marks a shift in mood from 2010, when a turquoise shade was given the color of the year designation, and “served as an escape for many,” Pantone said in announcing its choice for 2011.

“Honeysuckle emboldens us to face everyday troubles with verve and vigor,” said the company, a unit of X-Rite Inc. “A dynamic reddish pink, Honeysuckle is encouraging and uplifting. Specifically, Pantone identified PANTONE® 18-2120 Honeysuckle as its color of the year.

The company said its annual color of the year declarations have, for more than a decade, influenced product development and purchasing decisions in multiple industries including fashion, home décor and industrial design. Pantone is a provider of professional color standards for the design industries, and offers a line of paints, PANTONE Paints.

“In times of stress, we need something to lift our spirits,” Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, said of the color of the year choice. “Honeysuckle is a captivating, stimulating color that gets the adrenaline going—perfect to ward off the blues. Custom Bedding - Finishing Touches

We are in the final stages of a project with 4 bedrooms of custom bedding and window treatments. We’ve been working on this project since the beginning of construction, and we are excited that the house will be finished shortly after the first of the year.

To keep the fabrics and ideas for each bedroom separate, we decided to create a fabric sample sheet for each room. The color pages are a great visual representation of what will be going in each room.

The Style Statement- Audrey Walter

Our office is taking an exploratory journey into our personal style by reading and answering the questions in the book The Style Statement by Carrie McCarthy and Danielle LaPorte. Cheryl heard about this book from a fellow designer in High Point and we thought it would be fun to complete the book together.
The book is kind of like a workbook: you read several pages of other people’s profiles, then answer a series of questions about yourself. The questions range from a list of either/or choices, like “cabin/condo” to “what does your voice sound like to you?” Of course everyone has different answers , and usually Cheryl and Audrey have opposite answers – like in the case of cabin/condo, Audrey picked cabin, Cheryl picked condo.
The questions are broken down into categories like “Home and Stuff”, “Spirit and Learning”, and “Relationships and Communication”. Right now our office has made it through the first couple of sections of questions. We continue to get a kick out of the frank and honest answers we each write, and we all look forward to reporting our Style Statement after the first of the year.

Using a template to hang a group or collection of objects will minimize unnecessary holes in your walls and will result in a balanced arrangement and aesthetically pleasing design. We recently hung a collection of plates using the following steps:

1. Cut craft paper to general size of wall space for arrangement.

2. Lay craft paper on floor and arrange plates on craft paper. Trace each plate with a marker. Use the center of the wall space and arrangement as the starting point for your layout. This will help keep the final design balanced. Number each plate and its outline on the template with corresponding numbers.

3. Tape the template to the wall. Be sure to mark where each plate hook touches the wall. Hammer the hanger directly through craft paper template into the wall where you have marked the hook. Remove template and hang plate.

Recently, a client requested that we come up with various ways to accessorize some very tall shelving running along the wall of a staircase. The units are easily 8’0” high so everything needed to be very large in scale, chunky, and bulky. Wiry and thin items would be lost in the arrangements.

The above drawings gave the client some ideas as to the types of objects they could display. We also suggested starting a collection and used vintage baskets as an idea. In addition, we suggested incorporating a bronze figure, wooden boxes or trunks, or a globe.

Spring Cleaning Tips

Spring is almost here! It's time to get our homes ready for it. We have come up with a few tips to get you started. First you should probably think about cleaning your windows. Then consider changing your window treatments to lighter colors. Next you could put down runners to cut down on dirt from foot traffic. If you already have rugs, maybe it's time to switch them out. Our final indoor tip is to put out springtime scents. Everyone enjoys a fresh smelling house.

Don't forget to tend to the outside of your home, as well. If you take a close look at that outdoor furniture, you will probably notice that it needs a good cleaning. Fences and decks usually need some touch ups as well. As much as you hate it, clean out those gutters. Our final tip is to plant flowers. Seeing color in the yard really shows it's springtime.
